We believe that all young people should feel safe in their school and in their community; more than 100,000 young people avoid school every day for fears of being picked on and bullied. Bullying is the inflicting of intentional, repeated hurtful acts, words or other behavior, such as name-calling, threatening and/or shunning committed by one or more children against another; an imbalance in real or perceived power exists between bully and victim. The plain truth is, bullying hurts and it has caused some young people to feel so afraid and so helpless that some have taken their own lives to escape the bullying. The vast majority of people who have brought guns to school and have murdered numerous schoolmates and teachers were victims of ongoing bullying. It is important for a community to understand that it will take a concentrated effort to bring an end to the bullying problems. Many communities blame the school and say it’s the schools responsibility to stop it. The fact is everyone has to become involved and they will all have to play a positive role in order to be successful at bullying awareness and prevention. This program is specifically designed to educate and empower the students, parents, and teachers. Bullying can be extremely serious; bullying can affect the mental wellbeing, academic work, and physical health of children who are targeted. Children who are bullied are more likely than other children to have lower self-esteem; and higher rates of depression, loneliness, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Students will learn the facts about bullying, why some kids bully, what to do if you are being bullied, what to do to help others that are being bullied, what to do to bring an end to bullying in the school and the community. Through guided role-plays youth learn the effects of bullying on an emotional level. Teachers and parents will also learn the following: Best Practices in Bullying Prevention, Bullying in Out of School Programs, Documenting Bullying at Your School, How to Intervene to Stop Bullying, Providing Support to Children Who Are Bullied, Steps to Address Bullying at Your School, Working with Young People Who Bully, How to Talk with Educators About Bullying, What to Do if Your Child is Being Bullied.
